Badaptations

Badaptations is the creation of Amy and Stephanie, two English graduate students who wanted to a way to combine their passion for books, film, and pop culture. We review literature and films such as Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?/Blade Runner, and Frankenstein. To date we made seven video episodes (which you can view on our YouTube channel: http://tinyurl.com/badaptations), before switching back to our initial dream of recording podcast reviews. (You can find us on iTunes! http://tinyurl.com/badaptations-itunes).

NOTE: The project is currently under hiatus, as both of us finish our dissertations and complete our graduate fellowships, but we hope to revive Badaptations once we have graduated with our PhDs! In the meantime, you can contact us via the links below or by the following email address: badaptations [AT] gmail.com (replace [AT] with @ symbol).

  • "Breakfast at Tiffany's" - Badaptations (Chapter 1)

We talk about "Breakfast at Tiffany's" in our inaugural review! From Truman Capote's 1958 novella to the 1961 film starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard, is this adaptation a "badaptation"? We compare and analyze the two versions, including selected quotations and clips from each; our video also features: Marilyn Monroe, a disability studies reading featuring /Disability Theory/ by Tobin Siebers, and... a cat montage!

At the end, we each give our rating. What do you think? Badaptation or goodaptation? Let us know in the comments!

Please like our video, subscribe to the channel, and tell your friends! We also welcome suggestions for how to improve our channel, as well as ideas for future reviews.

  • "The Handmaid's Tale" - Badaptations (Chapter 2)

We've switched to a podcast format! Be sure to subscribe on iTunes here: https://t.co/PdUJa1wQNb

Hailed as an influential feminist and dystopian novel, The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood has been adapted most recently into a television series on Hulu. However, did you know before that, it had been adapted into a film from the 1990s? Starring Natasha Richardson, Faye Dunaway, and Robert Duvall, the 1990 film makes some interesting adaptation choices, including an erotica/softcore porn-like movie poster, and a twist on the ending (watch the video to find out the juicy details!).

Comparing the film to the book, we talk about significant differences between the two, including costuming choices (who knew scrunchies would survive totalitarian rule) and whatever happened to the line "nolite te bastardes carborundorum"?! And as always in our videos, a cat appears and takes over the set...

Have you seen the film adaptation? What did you think: badaptation, goodaptation, or something in-between? And how does it match up to the TV series (which we'll review at a later date)? Let us know in the comments!

Also, please like our video, subscribe to the channel, and tell your friends!

  • "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" / "Blade Runner" - Badaptations (Chapter 3)

We've switched to a podcast format! Be sure to subscribe on iTunes here: https://t.co/PdUJa1wQNb

Watch as a science fiction scholar & someone who's never seen *Blade Runner* before discuss Philip K. Dick's 1968 *Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?* and its 1982 film adaptation. Together we'll encounter spiders, Harrison Ford, and weaponized vaginas (with surprise cat cameo! catmeo? catmeow!).

At the end, we each give our rating of the film adaptation. What do you think? Would you retire Blade Runner (badaptation) or ride off into the mountains with it (goodaptation)? Let us know in the comments!

RIOT GRRRD

RIOT GRRRD is a zine committed to anti-sexism, anti-racism, & anti-homophobia. RIOT GRRRD is trans-inclusive & committed to intersectionality. RIOT GRRRD is about creativity, community, and crushing oppressive systems like the white hetero capitalist patriarchy. WE ARE THE REBELLION!

RIOT GRRRD is a zine inspired by the underground: countercultural movements like 80s punk/post-punk, the 90s riot grrrl movement, and anti-fascist activism. A mixture of handwritten/hand-drawn and printed & pasted, the zine was created as a tangible, creative outlet spurred to action after the 2016 presidential election results. We envisioned RIOT GRRRD as drawing inspiration from feminism, activism, and community at a time when all those movements were (are) in danger. The zine aesthetically references punk zine culture of the 1980s and riot grrrl! zines of the early 1990s, (cross)stitching an updated and intersectionality-focused punk aesthetics onto the co-editors’ academic interests in representation, voice making, and platform creation. In its essence RIOT GRRRD is a multimedia (but mostly cut-and-paste) collaborative collage filled with tips for self care, community building, calls to action, poetry, prose, playlists, and puns. Always distributed for free (around local Atlanta college campuses and as PDFs via email), as of September 2018 the monthly zine has published and printed 20 issues (later issues available in full-color).

NOTE: The zine is currently on an indefinite hiatus; however, I am planning to digitize all the past issues and create/code an online platform for the zine to live on as a digital archive. If you would like free PDF versions of past issues, please email us at: riotgrrrd [AT] hotmail.com (replace [AT] with the @ symbol).
